Brihadratha dynasty

According to the Mahabharata and the Puranas, the oldest dynasty of Magadha was the Brihadratha dynasty, founded by Brihadratha.

Brihadratha's son Jarasandha was a mighty king. He defeated many kings. He wanted to expand his kingdom to all of northern India but failed to do so due to the opposition of Pandavas and Krishna and was eventually killed by Bhima in the Malla war.

Ripunjaya was the last ruler of this dynasty. His minister Pulik got him killed and put his son on the throne. Pulika's son could not rule for long and he too was killed and Bimbisara sat on the throne of Magadha. With this the rule of Brihadratha dynasty ended and a new dynasty Haryanka dynasty emerged in Magadha.
